This year’s panel presented by AVRE explores the theme of “Identity, Technology, and Consciousness: What does it mean to be human in the digital age?”

A panel discussion drawing from classic dilemmas like the Ship of Theseus and sci-fi touchstones like Ghost in the Shell to address the emerging questions surrounding the advancement of artificial intelligence, biosensors, advanced prosthetics, neurotechnology, and brain-computer interfaces.

Where does our body end and technology begin? Are we still the same person when we replace or augment parts of our body and mind? Can a machine truly comprehend, possess consciousness, or develop an identity?

Moderated by Helena Ortiz Gil, the session will feature Pablo Mondragón, Javier Campos, Francesc-Josep Guillem i Crespo, and Vanessa Zorrilla Muñoz. Rather than predicting possible futures, the conversation aims to use technology as a tool to return to an essential question: what is it that truly makes us human?
